Photoshop cs3 erasing question?

errr...I was trying to make a forum signature....(new to this) so I was working on the stock image by creating a new layer...editing it then applying the image then creating a new layer and again so on... but after a couple of layer...my eraser stopped working O.O...I mean it didnt erase anything -_-; any idea what I am doing wrong? :(
